Through the eyes of a BD consultant and coach…
There’s so much more to get out of a conference than the usual highlight reel.
London Build was a reminder of that this week.
A common thread was that Purpose drives behaviour.
Whether your main interest was diversity, sustainability, digital innovation or leadership – the message was the same:
People who know their “why” show up differently.
The final session yesterday referred to the Five Whys exercise – something I use frequently in BD coaching.
Why does it matter?
Because when professionals connect to what truly motivates them – not the first answer, but the fifth – business development becomes:
- easier
- more authentic
- more intentional
- and far more sustainable
The reality is this: most professionals in the built environment want to focus on their projects and clients – understandably.
But in people-based businesses, BD is aligned with people development.
When individuals understand their purpose and values, BD stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like an extension of who they are.
Later that day, I brought the Five Whys into a client workshop — and unsurprisingly, it was the part that landed the most powerfully.
When did you last explore your own Five Whys?
